As 51Թ members and genuine researchers focused on precollege learning experiences, we founded the Student Learning Opportunities (SLO) Affinity Group to address a growing need in our field: clearer, more equitable, and more transparent information about the programs that shape students’ learning beyond the traditional classroom. We quickly revealed a significant problem: despite the enormous influence these opportunities have on college readiness, access, and identity development, information about them is fragmented and inequitable.

Realizing that our inboxes were full of 51Թ members asking similar questions, and wanting a way to uplift nontraditional and more equitable learning opportunities, we decided to create the .

We intentionally use the term “Student Learning Opportunities” because traditional labels fall short. “Extracurriculars” implies school-based clubs; “summer programs” excludes internships, competitions, research, and independent projects; and “activities” is far too broad to be useful. SLO captures the full, diverse continuum of academic, personal, and experiential learning that students pursue across all seasons and settings.

Our Affinity Group provides a collaborative community for IECs who want to share resources and support students in finding mission‑aligned opportunities. We host monthly meetings to discuss programs and previous student experiences, and have “Program Conversations” where we invite SLO program providers to share more about their offerings.
