Overview

In May 2026, 51³Ô¹Ï announced that it will develop and launch a new credential for Independent Educational Consultants, with full implementation unfolding over approximately 18 months. The will sunset its operations along that same timeline, and 51³Ô¹Ï will assume responsibility for the future of professional credentialing in our field.

This is a significant moment for independent educational consulting. The profession requires deep expertise in institutions, schools, and programs, student development and family dynamics, and ethical decision-making and business practices. Yet, unlike licensed counselors or certified financial planners, IECs have lacked a formal credential that the public broadly recognizes. A rigorous, well-designed credential will change that—strengthening professional credibility, helping families navigate a crowded marketplace, and giving the broader public a clearer understanding of the value an experienced IEC delivers.

Watch the Town Hall

51³Ô¹Ï hosted a Membership Town Hall on May 5, 2026, to share the vision for the credentialing initiative, walk through the process ahead, and answer member questions.

The Job Task Analysis, exam development, and pilot testing all depend on input from practicing IECs across every specialty, region, and career stage. If you are interested in contributing, please share your interest. Note: Member Login Required to Access the Survey.

How We Are Building the Credential

Our process follows established best practices for professional credentialing.

Job Task Analysis (JTA). We begin with a JTA—the foundational step in any defensible certification program. The JTA will formally catalog what an IEC actually does across specialties, experience levels, and regions, creating an empirical picture of the profession.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities framework (KSA). The JTA findings will inform a KSA framework that articulates what a credentialed IEC must know, demonstrate, and be able to do.

A fair, job-related, and legally defensible exam. The KSA framework will guide the development of a credentialing examination built to professional psychometric standards. 51³Ô¹Ï is engaging a professional psychometrics firm to lead this work.

Governance and infrastructure. Alongside the exam, we are reviewing and updating governance structures, implementing a learning management system to track and verify professional development, and launching a public relations campaign to help families, school counselors, admissions officers, and policymakers understand the value of a credentialed IEC.

Recognizing subspecialties. Different areas of educational advising requires distinct bodies of knowledge, including college, K-12, graduate/professional school, therapeutic programs, athletics, visual/performing arts, international student placement, and learning differences/neurodiversity. The credentialing framework will acknowledge those distinctions and give families a clearer picture of who to call and when.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 51³Ô¹Ï creating a credential now?
Independent educational consulting is a growing profession that requires real expertise—yet families have lacked a broadly accepted, reliable way to distinguish highly trained professionals from the simply self-described. Our field is mature enough to build a credential that meets professional standards and serves the public. The timing is right.

What is happening with AICEP and the CEP credential?
The AICEP Commission and 51³Ô¹Ï Board of Directors have agreed to a formal integration, and 51³Ô¹Ï will assume ownership of the credentialing work AICEP has led for years. AICEP will sunset its operations over approximately 18 months as 51³Ô¹Ï stands up the new credential. AICEP’s leadership has been a thoughtful partner throughout this transition.

Will current CEPs need to start over?
No. Current CEPs and experienced members will be respected, not restarted. Legacy pathways will be thoughtfully designed. Current CEPs are expected to have streamlined entry into the new system. If any gaps exist between the current credential and the future one, CEPs would only need to address those specific gaps rather than repeat the full process.

What about long-tenured 51³Ô¹Ï members who are not CEPs?
Long-tenured 51³Ô¹Ï members who have demonstrated professional commitment will also be recognized in whatever framework is developed. Details will be shared as the legacy pathways take shape.

Will I need to be an 51³Ô¹Ï member to earn the credential
No. The credential will be independent of 51³Ô¹Ï membership. Credentialing and membership are separate. 51³Ô¹Ï may offer member benefits such as discounted exam fees, but the credential itself will stand independently.

What is a Job Task Analysis, and why does it matter?
A JTA is the foundational step in any defensible certification program. It empirically catalogs the actual tasks a competent practitioner must be able to perform. The JTA’s findings drive the rest of the credentialing process—the KSA framework, the exam content, and the eligibility requirements—and ensure that the credential reflects the real work of an IEC. Our field has never completed such a study, and it is one of the most exciting parts of this initiative.

Will the exam be a multiple-choice exam?
Decisions about exam format will be informed by the JTA, the psychometrics firm, and best practices for professional credentialing. While final decisions have not been made, widely recognized credentials typically rely on highly standardized testing formats, and a multiple-choice examination is one likely direction.

Will the credential recognize subspecialties?
Yes. The credentialing framework will recognize subspecialties that require a distinct body of knowledge.

What infrastructure is 51³Ô¹Ï building to support this?
51³Ô¹Ï is making significant investments, including engaging a professional psychometrics firm, reviewing and updating governance structures, implementing a learning management system to track and verify professional development, and launching a public relations campaign about the value of a credentialed IEC.

What is the timeline?
51³Ô¹Ï announced the initiative publicly in May 2026, with full implementation expected to unfold over approximately 18 months. We will share milestone updates as the JTA, KSA framework, and exam development progress.

How can I get involved?
The strongest way to contribute is to complete the Participation Interest Survey. Members will be invited to participate in JTA surveys, focus groups, item review, pilot testing, and standard-setting as the work unfolds.

How will recertification work?
Specifics will be developed alongside the credential, but 51³Ô¹Ï’s planned learning management system is expected to allow much professional development to be tracked automatically, significantly reducing the reporting burden on credential holders compared to today’s process.
