My college advising niche is financial aid and making a plan to pay the cost of a 4-year degree. I identify the student’s eligibility for need-based aid (the EFCs based on the FAFSA and CSS Profile), and for merit aid (academic scholarships). I suggest colleges that are likely to award aid given the student’s need and merit profiles and are suitable given the student’s other college priorities. I estimate costs at the colleges I’ve suggested as well as those already on the student’s list, and extend the cost over 4 years. I create 4-year payment plan scenarios at several price points and evaluate with the family what cost of degree is reasonable. My goal is to help families identify their Zone of Affordability
