When I transitioned from software development to independent education consulting, I brought skills in system design and strategic planning—but I quickly learned that helping teenagers navigate their futures requires more than analytical thinking. It demands listening, mentoring, creative problem-solving, and something I didn’t have yet: a professional community that could match my commitment to students. I found that community in 51³Ô¹Ï, and it has transformed both my practice and my ability to serve families.
A Place Where All Are Welcome
My path to independent educational consulting was unconventional. After earning my BS in computer science engineering and spending years in software development, I spent 15 years as part of the Austin homeschool community teaching, speaking, and mentoring others as they created curriculum (and graduation plans) for their family. In 2017, I moved into public school college counseling at a K-12 charter school. When I decided in 2022 to launch my IEC practice, I wondered whether 51³Ô¹Ï would have room for someone with my nontraditional background.
What I discovered was an organization that values diverse perspectives and experiences. Yes, 51³Ô¹Ï maintains rigorous membership criteria, but those standards focus on competence, ethics, and dedication—not on following a prescribed career trajectory. The association welcomes practitioners from varied backgrounds who share a commitment to serving students and families with integrity. I found colleagues who had been classroom teachers, admissions officers, school counselors, and path-changers like me. We all belonged.
Credibility That Matters
In an industry where anyone can call themselves a college consultant, 51³Ô¹Ï membership signals something important to families. The membership criteria—demonstrated experience, professional references, ongoing education—distinguish ethical practitioners from those simply capitalizing on parental anxiety.
Families and admissions professionals understand that I’m a member of an established professional organization where I’m held accountable to ethical standards and best practices. For families investing significant time, trust, and resources in the college planning process, this credibility provides essential reassurance. It tells them I’m part of a profession, not just running a business. For college representatives, my 51³Ô¹Ï membership signals that I adhere to 51³Ô¹Ï’s , understand the complexities of the admissions process, and serve as a responsible partner in supporting students.
Knowledge at Your Fingertips
The depth of knowledge available through 51³Ô¹Ï is staggering. When I have a question about a specific university’s policy, an unusual student situation, or a technical aspect of the application process, I can tap into the collective wisdom of hundreds of experienced independent educational consultants. Responses arrive within hours, offering multiple perspectives and practical solutions.
My 51³Ô¹Ï cohort remains one of my most valuable professional resources. We’ve stayed connected, sharing insights about emerging trends, challenging cases, and business development, bolstering my network of trusted colleagues I can consult anytime.
51³Ô¹Ï membership bridges geographic distances, allowing me to learn from fellow IECs across the country and internationally who have deep knowledge of regional schools, specialized programs, and local opportunities I’d never encounter in Texas. The 51³Ô¹Ï webinars and library offer resources that keep me current on evolving admissions practices. This continuous learning ensures I’m providing families with accurate, up-to-date guidance.
Specialty Resources When You Need Them
No IEC can be an expert in everything, and being part of 51³Ô¹Ï ensures I don’t have to be. The organization’s affinity groups for athletics, fine arts, transfer students, learning differences, college affordability, and other focus areas connect me with ethical and experienced specialists. Through these groups and the member directory, I can refer families to experts who focus on their specific needs or consult with specialists to better support my own clients. The question isn’t whether I can help every student alone—it’s whether my network can, and with 51³Ô¹Ï, the answer is yes.
The Generous Culture of Giving
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of 51³Ô¹Ï membership has been the extraordinary generosity of colleagues. When I was building my business, more experienced IECs freely shared practical advice about everything from client contracts to scheduling systems. They treated me as a fellow professional deserving support, not as competition.
When building college lists, I reach out to colleagues with deeper institutional knowledge. An IEC in Boston helps me understand nuances between similar New England liberal arts colleges. A performing arts specialist offers insights I can’t gain from websites alone. These IECs invest their time and expertise because that’s the culture 51³Ô¹Ï has built—we succeed by helping each other serve students better.
Finding My Professional Home
My career has come full circle. I once solved technical problems; now I help solve human ones, using my gifts of listening and creative problem-solving to help individuals discern their next best step and accomplish their goals. 51³Ô¹Ï provides the professional home that enables me to do this work with confidence, competence, and the backing of colleagues who share my values.
I belong to 51³Ô¹Ï because it makes me better at serving students and families. The organization doesn’t just qualify me as a member—it equips, challenges, and supports me. For anyone considering membership, my message is simple: this is a community that will welcome you, elevate your practice, teach you, support you, and ultimately help you serve students at the highest level. That’s why I belong.
